                          THE LOUNSBURY FAMILY

The Lounsburys of this county are doubtless all descended from
Richard Lounsbury or lainsbury who in 1672 was one of the proprietors of
Peningo Neck, a considerable tract of land on the sound in Westchester
County.
Baird in his "History of Rye[? Rye blurred] says "He sold his land
and rights there in 1673-1682 but retained land or Budd's Neck". This
last was held for several generations in the family and is known to this
day as "The Lounsbury Farm", although no longer owned by one of that
name........
Richard seems to have lived at one time at Stamford, Conn. and some
of his descendents are yet to be found there. He died in 1694 leaving a
widow Elizabeth, and six children, John, Thomas, Michael, Henry, Richard
and Mary.
The date of birth of none of these is known except Henry who was
born in Stamford, conn. Aug 15, 1684, according to Huntington in his
"History of Stamford", who also informs us that Michael married sarah
Lockwood.
John seems to have remained in Stamford. Michael purchased land
near Taunton and perhaps settled there. Richard was one of the 41
proprietors of White Plains in 1720. Thomas is said to have had
interests in White Plains property. For the next 2or 3 generations the
genealogy of the family is very obscure and the tracing of lines of
descent mere guesswork.
An Isaac Lounsbvury, perhaps son of John, lived on Budd's Neck in
1729, and a William Lounsbury, possibly son of Isaac, lived there in
1760. Another Isaac Lounsbuty was living in what is now Putnam County in
1760 and it is this Isaac in whom we have the most interest. Wm. S.
[P]elletreau, the historian of Putnam /County, regards him as a son of
Richard, but I am disposed to consider him a son of Thomas.
